Biosketch: Dr. Ulrika Bengtsson

Ulrika Bengtsson is senior lecturer at the Institute of Health and Care Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University Gothenburg and a researcher at the Gothenburg University Center for Person Centred Care (GPCC), with a background as Specialist Nurse towards Primary Health Care. She defended her thesis “Self-management in Hypertension Care” in 2015. The research she conducted for her doctoral degree derived from her interest in, and conviction of the importance of, putting the person at the centre of attention, not only in the caring actions but also in the planning, designing and performing of research aiming towards empowering of patients for independence and autonomy. Important aspects of this area of research she thinks are; personal perceptions of one’s condition and treatment, communication and interaction between patients and caregivers, and how knowledge and insights in relation to one’s own condition is created and internalised. Once this approach towards design, planning and conducting of care and research is made clear, this need be applied practically. The work she conducted within her interdisciplinary research team resulted in a support tool for self-management of hypertension, usable for both patients and health care professionals in the efforts of better understanding the connections between signs, symptoms, medications and lifestyle related to hypertension and hypertension treatment. Her vision ahead is to use the knowledge provided by her research, with regard to how knowledge and insights in relation to high blood pressure were made relevant in the life of the patients, by the connecting of signs back to context and concrete situations in everyday life. It is of relevance when we are to motivate persons with chronic conditions to initiate and stay in track of lifestyle changes.
